MRI Room Planning & Infrastructure Requirements
An MRI suite adds problems a CT room never has — a magnet that is always on, a cryogen vent that must reach outside air, and a fringe field that does not respect walls. RADbuild plans and builds the whole environment.
What makes MRI different
Every constraint that applies to a CT room applies here too: structure, power, earthing, cooling, access, flooring. MRI then adds four that have no equivalent in CT, and each of them can invalidate an otherwise good site.
The magnet is always on
A superconducting magnet does not switch off between patients. The fringe field extends in three dimensions — through walls, through floors, and through the ceiling into whatever is above. Planning has to account for what occupies the adjacent spaces vertically as well as horizontally, and for controlled access at the boundary. Where the field would otherwise extend into occupied or sensitive areas, magnetic shielding is considered as part of the design.
Ferrous everything becomes a hazard
The building itself has to be planned around the field. Structural steel, reinforcement, ductwork, cable trays, fire equipment, door hardware, furniture and the trolleys that will be wheeled in later all need consideration. This shapes ordinary construction decisions long before the equipment arrives.
The quench pipe has to go somewhere
If the magnet quenches, cryogen boils off rapidly and must be vented safely to outside air. The route has to be identified early, because it drives structural penetrations and often the position of the magnet room itself. It must be correctly sized and supported, and the discharge point placed clear of air intakes, windows, walkways and public areas. Oxygen monitoring inside the magnet room is part of the same safety design.
This is regularly the constraint that decides where in a building an MRI can go — and it is regularly discovered far too late.

The rest of the environment
Structure and access
A magnet is heavy and awkward, and the delivery route matters more than in almost any other install. The full path — gate, driveway, entrance, corridors, turning radii, lift capacity, door openings — is surveyed against the actual magnet dimensions, and temporary structural openings or craneage planned where the route will not take it. The slab and beams are assessed for both the resting load and the transit load along that route.
Cooling and the chiller platform
MRI systems have continuous cooling requirements and tight environmental tolerances, and the cooling cannot simply stop. That means chiller and cooling water circuits with appropriate redundancy, and an outdoor platform that is structurally designed, positioned for pipe run length, vibration isolated and left accessible for service.
Power and earthing
Load study against real demand, transformer adequacy, DG backup, UPS for the systems that must not lose power, in-house fabricated LT panels, and a dedicated clean earth within the manufacturer's tolerance — tested and certified.
HVAC, flooring and interiors
Temperature and humidity held inside tolerance, room pressurisation and fresh air, quench venting and oxygen monitoring. Flooring to levelling tolerance with cable routing planned into trenches or false flooring, then the control room, reporting area, changing rooms and patient areas finished properly.
